Las ciudades latinoamericanas siempre se han caracterizado por una fuerte tensión entre lo que vagamente se describe como sus dimensiones formal e informal. Sin embargo, a pesar de las implicaciones semánticas intrínsecas, los términos formal e informal no se refieren sólo al aspecto físico de las ciudades, sino también a todo su tejido sociopolítico.
